Why Recruiters Should Focus On Hiring Talent (And What Happens When They Dont)

Why Recruiters Should Focus On Hiring Talent (And What Happens When They Dont) Recruiting top talent is crucial to ensure long-term growth and performance for any ambitious business. Equally important is to allow your talent to use their strengths after they’re hired. Utilising employees in the wrong way can lead to stress, frustration, depression and general dissatisfaction. It can also lead to increasing staff turnover and reduced productivity for the organisation. This infographic by Onlinenmba highlights what can happen when recruiters get it wrong, but also how the organisation and employees benefit from being recruited into roles where they can use their strengths. When You Get It Wrong: More than 2 out of 3 hiring managers reported that a new hire negatively affected their business this year. Some businesses  estimated the cost of failed hires to amount to over  $50,000. Add to that the cost of recruiting in the first place, and training on top of that. This article on  cost of hiring new employees suggests that some businesses spend up to $3,500 per employee in direct and indirect costs on recruiting. When You Get It Right: Employees who use their strengths at work experience less worry, stress and feelings of sadness. Employees who use their strengths feel more energetic, happy, well-rested and respected. Only 36% of employees reported feeling stressed when using their strengths at work for more than 10 hours per day. In comparison, 52% of employees reported high levels of stress when applying their strengths for less than three hours per day.  Employees reported being more engaged at work when the supervisor focused on their strengths. More than 60% of employees surveyed reported being engaged at work when supervisors focused on their strengths, versus 2% when feeling ignored. Heres what you  can do at the interview to secure the best talent: Use talent assessment tools as a part of the interview process. Inquire about the applicants preferences in regards to work projects, work environment, etc. Recruiters can use behavioural interviewing techniques to understand how the candidates  have previously approached challenges relevant to those he or she will face in the position he or she is being considered for. These techniques require the candidate to draw upon his or her past work experiences, and reveals a great deal about how the candidate thinks and acts in specific situations. See the infographic below for more information. RELATED:  What Could a Bad Hire Cost Your Company?

Five Key Skills that Recruiters look for in Candidates

Five Key Skills that Recruiters look for in Candidates Five Key Skills that Recruiters look for in Candidates Trying to work out exactly what recruiters want from job applicants isnt always easy. This is especially true when it comes to formulating your resume. You understand that you need to adapt your resume to be in line with the job that you are applying for, but you also have to prove to the recruiter who is skimming your resume that you actually have the skills they are looking for.Lets take a closer look at the five most common skills that all potential new employers are looking for within each application and how best to effectively demonstrate them. Company AwarenessNo matter what business sector you choose to work in, all recruiters will appreciate your company awareness.   This basically means doing some homework about the company history, their major milestones, and any industry awards won or innovative steps taken in their field. It can also help to have an understanding of the companys direct competition in their marketplace, and a bit of background knowledge about the produc ts and services on offer. Demonstrating commercial awareness will impress the recruiting officer and can help make them warm to you.To help you with your research you can follow the company on their social media accounts and read their feeds and regular updates. You can also check out the company blog, if they have one, and also sign up for the company newsletter and read through their media and press-release pages on the company website.Use your knowledge to impress at interview. You should also mention on your resume that you are an active follower of their company on social media and that you keep up with business trends and business news relating to their sector.Teamwork SkillsJust about every role you apply for will involve some level of teamwork, whether that is actually working within a large dedicated team, or with just one other person in a small business set-up. Demonstrating that you have good teamwork skills within your resume is vital. You can list on your resume how you gained your teamwork skills via a variety of previous jobs, hobbies, sports or study. So this could include group projects at college, working alongside others in an office or retail setting, or being a player in your local sports team.Your teamwork skills can be listed on your resume in its own section should you be submitting a skills based resume, or you could list them within your About Me section where you are trying to get over your personality. Recruiters like to see that you could be a friendly team-player that would fit in well with their existing structure.Good Communication SkillsAgain, much like your teamwork skills as mentioned above, having good communication skills will be another essential skill to get across in your resume. This will be especially important to emphasise should the role you are applying for involves interacting directly with customers, talking to business clients, B2B networking, or communicating and working closely with other departments within the company. You could demonstrate this by referring to a role you held where you provided excellent customer service on a day to day basis, or presented a project that involved contributions from other team members or information gathered from other departments. It is important that you state your skills include not only verbal face-to-face communication but also personal presentation skills, telephone skills, as well as written and electronic combinations including social media.Good Organisational SkillsSaying that you have good organisational skills can sound a bit vague when written on a resume. You need to explain that you can work to pressing deadlines as well as prioritise your workload to ensure everything goes smoothly. Confirming that you have excellent time-management skills in this way will demonstrate that you are self-motivated and will make you more appealing to a prospective employer. These types of skills will be of special interest to recruiters looking for peopl e who will be happy working in creative and fast-paced industries, such as media, publishing, graphic design etc.Related SkillsObviously, the recruiting officer will be looking for key skills which match the job on offer, but they will also be looking for transferable skills that you are able to take from job to job.The importance of your job related skills will depend on the type and level of role you are applying for. Lets say that you were applying for a job in IT and you have a solid background in coding. Your coding skills are going to be important but you may need to be proficient in more than one coding language as well as having transferable skills in operating various software packages. previous article Minimalistic Green â€" A Simplified Resume Template Giveaway next article CV Design for the Female Applicant For the Ladies! you might also likeHow to Write About Your Accomplishments on Your Resume

How to Stay Calm When Interviewing Dream Company

How to Stay Calm When Interviewing Dream Company YES! You just got the interview with the company of your dreams. It must be hard to process all those emotions â€" happiness, eagerness nervousness. What will you do? How will you impress your potential employer? You may be under a lot of pressure, but there are some steps you can take to ensure youre totally prepared for the big day. Read on to find out some tips to keep your cool when interviewing with your dream company! Plan Ahead Its happened to the best of us. Youre confident everything will fall into place on the day of the interview. But to your dismay your printer is out of ink so you cant print your resume, you forgot to iron your best shirt, and you hit an absurd amount of traffic on the way there. You told yourself you would plan ahead what happened? Save the stress for another day. Planning ahead is the best thing you can do for the interview, because youll be able to save your energy for when you need it most. So buy that ink and lay your clothes out the night before. Another important aspect of planning ahead is to practice! If youre nervous about what to say, or youre unsure about what questions interviewers will ask, ask a friend or family member to help you. Have them ask you possible questions, so youll be prepared for the real thing. Be an Active Listener Once you get to the interview, though, you cant be all talk. An interview isnt just someone talking at you for an hour, and its not you talking at them. Its a two-way conversation, and you should treat it like youre having a chat with an ordinary person â€" but an ordinary person who deserves respect. Part of this is being a good listener. If you take time to listen, it takes you off the hot seat so you can relax. But this isnt a time to space out â€" its important to hear the interviewer out, because they can give you valuable information about the company and position youre applying for. Another part of listening is actually paying attention to the questions youre being asked. If you just recite a prepared response, it will seem like the interview is more like an interrogation than a conversation. No one wants to hire a robot. Control Your Body Believe it or not, potential employers notice your body language. Certain movements and positions can signal the fact that youre nervous. Some of these movements you should keep under control are as follows: Touching your face or hair Fidgeting Crossed arms Slouching Lack of eye contact or shifty eyes Thankfully, most of the time these wont make or break your interview, because chances are youre a stellar person. But there are easy remedies for these nervous actions as well. Keep your hands visible and on the table. This is a sign of honesty, and it also keeps you from fidgeting with your face and hair. Take deep breaths and slow down! You have a lot of time to impress the employer. Pace Yourself and Stay Focused Speaking of slowing down, pacing yourself is key to nailing the interview. While its great to enter with energy and finesse, you cant just give up on that in the middle. You have to carry your enthusiasm until the very end. Pacing yourself will help. In order to sustain your energy and prevent rushing, get plenty of sleep the night before and drink a lot of water. A snack right before the interview can also help. If the interview is especially long, youll be glad you kept up your act until the end. Smile! Many people seem to equate an interview to being on death row. But as mentioned before, if you know how to handle yourself through the interview, itll be more like a casual conversation between two polite individuals. One of the best ways to handle the interview is to smile. Even a forced smile can make you feel more relaxed and happy, which is important because a positive attitude is greatly needed in the workplace. Make the interviewer know you are a compassionate and approachable person. They will be lucky to have you!
